Design Objective / Control and Confidence for Professional Use
Industrial drone controllers must accommodate multiple physical controls and a display within a limited surface area, while providing quick access to essential information and functions.
Starting from a symmetrical layout, we established a clear hierarchy for the control sticks, dials, physical buttons and display, considering both operation and visibility. The exterior design explores how to convey the precision of electronic instrumentation alongside the rugged character expected of field equipment.
Control Layout & Ergonomics / Intuitive Controls and a Secure Grip
On the front face, the primary control sticks, dials and physical buttons are arranged on either side of the central display, making the control layout easy to understand at a glance.
At the rear, grip thickness and finger placement informed the positioning of trigger controls intended to remain accessible while holding the device. We considered the ergonomics of both surfaces together, aiming to balance visibility, ease of operation and a stable grip during extended use.
3D CAD / Enclosure Development / Exploring Enclosure Geometry and Ergonomics
We used 3D CAD to iteratively refine grip cross-sections, enclosure thickness, control placement and the surface geometry of individual components.
Moving between CAD modeling and CGI studies of materials and lighting, we developed a form whose surface transitions and structural character remain clearly defined within a predominantly black enclosure.
