Design Objective / Bringing Measurement and Assessment into One Handheld Tool
Equipment inspection requires operators to examine a target, review multiple measurements and assess its condition within a limited time.
DATUM H1 brings optical and measurement modules, a display and controls together in a compact enclosure. The concept supports a continuous workflow from measurement and review through to recording results. A clear organization of functions gives the device the visual precision of a measuring instrument and the purposeful character of a professional field tool.

Ergonomics & Enclosure Design / Supporting One-Handed Operation
We explored proportions that allow the device to be held and aimed with one hand, with convenient access to the display and primary controls.
The relationship between the main body and grip, access to the top-mounted controls, and protective geometry around the sensing components were considered together, with the aim of providing a stable grip during extended inspection tasks.
A predominantly matte-black color, material and finish (CMF) palette, paired with blue accents, communicates the precision and functional character of a professional measuring instrument.
Brand Identity / A Visual Identity Built Around a Reference Point
The name DATUM, meaning a reference or reference point, informed a logotype intended to express the precision and advanced character of the instrument.
Geometric letterforms, a distinctive “A” without a crossbar, and generous letter spacing create a restrained, precise visual identity. The H1 model designation is integrated into the logotype, establishing a consistent identity for application across enclosure markings, the graphical user interface and brand imagery.
Interface / Measurement Information for On-Site Assessment
The interface places camera imagery at the center of the screen, with distance, temperature and other measurement information presented alongside it.
A clear information hierarchy helps users relate each reading to the inspection target. The GUI concept is intended to keep frequently repeated checks to a small number of steps.
By developing the enclosure and GUI as a unified system of interaction, we aimed to create a continuous workflow from taking measurements to assessing equipment condition.
