Design Concept / Precision and Confidence in a Form That Fits Its Environment
Centrifuges are used routinely in research and clinical laboratories, yet their internal mechanisms require a substantial enclosure.
VECTRA STAT uses soft, continuous surfaces to reduce the enclosure’s visual bulk on the laboratory bench. The design aims to convey the precision expected of medical and laboratory equipment while sitting comfortably alongside surrounding instruments and workspaces.

Usability & Detail / Designed Around Routine Laboratory Workflows
Working with a top-access configuration, we considered opening and closing the lid, loading and unloading sample tubes, and checking the display as a connected sequence of tasks.
A dark finish around the rotor conveys mechanical precision and provides visual contrast with the sample tubes. Its contrast with the lighter exterior helps distinguish the loading area at a glance.

Interface | Clear Controls and Operating Information at a Glance
The interface prioritizes quick recognition of rotational speed, run time and operating status. A simplified control layout establishes a clear sequence of interaction, with the aim of making routine operation straightforward.
Essential information is grouped on the top surface to support frequently repeated tasks. The enclosure and graphical user interface were developed together as a unified design concept, creating a consistent user experience across the instrument.

Safety & Maintenance / Design Considerations for Safer Handling and Easier Cleaning
To accommodate frequent lid opening and closing, we explored hinge clearances and lid motion intended to limit finger access to potential pinch points.
The hinge arrangement also keeps the mechanism visually integrated with the enclosure while addressing these safety considerations.
For equipment used to handle samples, ease of cleaning is an important part of the design. Continuous surfaces are intended to minimize areas where residue can collect, while access around the rotor supports routine cleaning and inspection. The study considers the full user experience, including everyday operation, cleaning and maintenance.
